An upcoming New York event series called Living Equipment will explore the "radical resonances" of Black electronic music.
Running across several Manhattan and Brooklyn venues from 16th March through the 29th, Living Equipment will examine the "migrations and mutations of Black music", with an emphasis on how geography impacted those movements and evolutions that eventually formed house and techno. The series is hosted by Ryan C. Clarke, the New Orleans-based tonal geologist, writer and Dweller Electronic co-editor, and magazine Triple Canopy, in partnership with Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought.
Living Equipment will present discussions, DJ sets, archival recordings and personal histories with featured guests like SHYBOI, artist and filmmaker Ephraim Asili, Dweller and Discwoman's Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson, MORENXXX, Sweater on Polo, Black Quantum Futurism' Rasheedah Phillips, writer and historian Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts and visual artist Ashley Teamer. The six events — free with an RSVP — will take place at Triple Canopy, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Oda, Silence Please and Nightmoves.
The series name is inspired by critic Albert Murray's phrase "equipment for living": "stylistic codes for representing the most difficult conditions, but also... a strategy for living and triumphing over those conditions with dignity, grace and elegance".
After the March New York run, Living Equipment will pick up in May in New Orleans.
