Instagram Trying To Kill Snapchat with A New Companion App for Close Friends

Instagram is taking on Snapchat with a new companion app called Threads.

The new communication system developed by Facebook allows close friend circles to stay in touch — something Snapchat has been trying to do all along with private messaging and group chats.

Threads will reportedly promote constant, automatic sharing with close friends. Information such as battery life and approximate location will be readily available. This, along with other direct messaging functions already present with Instagram.

The Threads interface looks similar to Instagram. Messages from friends appear in a central feed and a green dot lets you know who’s online. Threads’ built-in camera allows you to capture photos/videos and send them to your close friends.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously stated he sees private messaging as the future the company.

It’s unknown when Threads will launch.
