Lauryn Hill and The Fugees quietly cancel US tour days before first show

Lauryn Hill's upcoming 'Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' anniversary tour featuring the Fugees has been cancelled, Variety reports.

On 6th August, ticketholders reportedly received refund notices for the upcoming dates this summer and autumn. According to screenshots of the message posted on social media, it read: "Your event has been cancelled. A refund will be on its way to your account soon.”

On 7th August, Hill shared a statement with Pitchfork addressing the cancellation addressing the decision: "Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows. Regrettably, some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour. The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal." You can read the full statement below.

The 18-date tour was going to hit cities all over the US, beginning this week, 9th August, in Tampa, Florida and ending in Holmdel, New Jersey on 21st September. The European and UK leg of the tour is still set to begin on 16th October in Cologne.

Fugees first announced a reunion tour to celebrate 25 years of 'The Score' in 2021. It was postponed and later cancelled in the following year; ongoing Covid-19 conditions were stated as the reason for its cancellation.

The group did perform some dates of 'Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' tour last year before postponing the remaining dates in November due to Hill's vocal strain.

Before the initial run of The Miseducation Anniversary Tour was postponed, Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees performed at the 2023 Global Citizen Festival in New York.

This March, Ms. Lauryn Hill was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame alongside Donna Summer and De La Soul.

In 2021, Ms. Lauryn Hill became the first female MC to receive a diamond certification from The Recording Industry Association (RIAA) of America for 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill'.

Statement from Ms. Lauryn Hill:

With difficulty the decision was made to pull down our upcoming North American tour dates.

The shows in the UK and Europe ARE MOVING FORWARD as planned.

Last year, I faced an injury that necessitated the rescheduling of some of my shows. Regrettably, some media outlet’s penchant for sensationalism and clickbait headlines have seemingly created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American portion of the tour. The trust and faith I have in my intentions and my commitment to my art seem to have been overshadowed by this unfortunate portrayal.

The audiences in the UK and Europe not only haven’t seen the Miseducation Anniversary performance yet, they also haven’t seen the Fugees perform together in over 25 years!

Performing for my fans, is a profound exchange of energy and emotion that excites me every time. Every show is a piece of my expression and testament to our connection and shared love for music. I can assure you that no one is more disappointed about not being able to perform than I am.

Know that I am not only grateful for those who appreciate and support my art, but that I FIGHT and push through all kinds of resistance to put together experiences that mean something for all of us. I love being able to bring these performances to you!

I appreciate your understanding. We’re looking forward to performing at the shows in the UK and Europe in October — and for our fans in North America, when these unforeseen circumstances are resolved, we’ll be back in full force...

With Love, Respect and Honesty,
MLH
