Orbital are releasing a remix of Energy 52’s trance classic, ‘Café del Mar’, later this week. Have an exclusive first listen and watch the music video below.
Out 17th May via Superstition Records, the rework rounds out a new double-A package which sees the 1993 hit, written by Kid Paul and Cosmic Baby, remixed by Orbital and Kompakt Records boss Michael Mayer.
Described by the duo as “an ode to the golden age of rave”, Orbital’s take builds on the radiant groove of the original, folding their signature sweeping synth lines over intelligent percussion and a punchy breakbeat core.
Speaking about the coveted crossover to DJ Mag, Orbital shared: “How do you go about mixing a stone-cold classic like Café del Mar? You bring it into your world, cosy up to it, pour it a cup of tea (it is a Cafe after all) and make it your own.”
Often considered one of the defining European dance music tracks of all time, ‘Café del Mar’, which takes its name from one of Ibiza’s best-loved sunset venues, has a storied history of remixes. Energy 52’s own 1998 update remains one of the best remembered, but more recent years have seen the likes of Paul van Dyk, Ricardo Villalobos, deadmau5, and Tale of Us take on additional production duties. The latter coincided with the 25th anniversary of the original.
Orbital’s remix of ‘Café del Mar’ is out on vinyl and digital on 17th May. Watch the new music video and listen to the track exclusively below.
