Roland has collaborated with Detroit legend Moodymann and his KDJ Records label on a new, limited edition, branded SP-404 mkII sampler.
The SP-404 MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition is limited to 600 units worldwide and features a customised faceplate with the Moodymann logo and other KDJ designs, exclusive samples created especially for the KDJ Records Limited Edition by the KDJ Records label roster, and “a seven-inch vinyl record and mixtape filled with key selections from the KDJ discography”.
Much like the original SP-404 MKII, the unit features 17 RGB velocity-sensitive pads, an OLED display, and onboard FX like vinyl simulator, DJFX looper, lo-fi cassette simulator and resonators. It can be powered via USB-C or six internal AA batteries for on-the-go beat-making and performance. It also features 16GB of internal storage and dual headphones for collaborating, and an mic/instrument input for sampling. KDJ Records is the iconic record label founded by Moodymann; the KDJ refers to Kenny Dixon Jr, the producer’s real name.
The SP-404 is an iconic sampler that played a fundamental role in lo-fi hip-hop, and is revered by many in the scene. Roland released a long-awaited new version of the unit in October 2021.
