Suzi Analogue will debut a new audiovisual piece and live electronic score at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this week.
'BY ANY MEANZ SONICALLY' is a new performance that "shines a spotlight on the profound contributions of Black women to the evolution of electronic dance music", according to BAM, intersecting on "race, gender and genre" lines. It follows Black women's impact on music from early jazz and R&B through to today's wide-ranging styles across the globe. Prominent Black artists like Betty Davis, Sister Sledge, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Sylvia Robinson and Alice Coltrane are highlighted as influences and references.
"'BY ANY MEANZ SONICALLY' is about identity, innovation and the groundbreaking contributions of Black women who have shaped music and culture", Suzi Analogue said in a press statement. "This performance is a tribute, a reflection and a sonic space for honoring their legacies while imagining the sounds of the future.”
Directed by JONES with archival research and production by Emmy Parker, Suzi Analogue's new work will premiere this Friday, 23rd January at 7PM at BAM, followed by a Q&A session with producer and songwriter Yvonne Turner.
