Twitch’s official DJ category launches this week with 24-hour stream

Twitch will launch its official DJ category this week.

Tomorrow, 8th August, the streaming platform will celebrate the launch of its dedicated DJing channel with a 24-hour worldwide livestream featuring DJs across the globe. Artists include Aluna, Grandmaster Flash, ZHU, Sub Focus and HoneyLuv, among others. The event will begin at 8 AM BST.

The DJ programme was first announced back in June after Twitch inked a deal with major and independent labels to allow DJs to stream on the platform without takedowns. It will offer selectors access to the DJ category on Twitch, a catalogue of music to use in their livestreams, promotional opportunities on and off the platform (such as placement on the website's homepage), sponsorship opportunities and the ability to cover the cost of music rights used in livestreams.

Twitch will also pay the first year of costs to help cover the difference in revenue paid out to music companies and their artists. As the service grows in the next 12 months, the amount of the subsidy will reduce and DJs will have to share earnings with the labels.

"[The] DJ category launch is a major moment for Twitch, the music industry, and our creators," said Twitch CEO Dan Clancy in a press release. "There is something special in the way DJs on Twitch introduce music to their listeners. It’s personal and it’s community-oriented, so we’ve built a stable, long-term home where they can invest in building their brand and community. We can’t wait to see them grow, create content and thrive."

Zedd added: "Twitch has given me an opportunity to celebrate and connect with my fans worldwide during a very important time for me as I’m soon releasing my next album. I'm proud to be a part of the DJ program launch and I’m looking forward to reaching new audiences."
