Billboard is quick to point out that the methodology for tracking albums and songs on its charts has changed significantly since the 1980s with the advent streaming.
“As such, listeners’ repeated streams Stoney songs have contributed to the album’s ranking each week,” says Billboard, “whereas for Thriller, its pre-streaming era release means that fans likely bought the album only once, and thus helped its ranking for only that single week purchase.”
