Sputnik One launches his N-Face label this month with the release of a brand new two-tracker, ‘Supa Natural / Grafters’. Listen to ‘Grafters’ below.
The Dublin-based DJ and producer – who demonstrated his percussive and shapeshifting approach to club music in his Fresh Kicks mix last year – teased the label’s first EP a few weeks ago with the release of ‘Supa Natural’, a slice of dubwise grime alchemy featuring Belfast MC Emby. The pair also delivered a freakishly sick set on Berlin’s HÖR station, which you can check out here.
Speaking about his vision for the new label, Sputnik One said: “‘En Face’ means facing forward; the name N-Face is a wee nod to my French background and also states the goal of embracing futurism from a unique perspective with our releases. My hope is to have a loose, unstructured approach to each record, manifesting unexpected collaborations and encouraging a certain level of controlled chaos to happen for the sake of fun for everyone involved!”
The label will also place a particular focus on visuals. “It’s incredibly important that the art for each release reflects the music and, more importantly, reflects what represents the artist's feeling on their work,” he said. “I want to make every single one special in its own way and be its own microcosm, by whatever means are available at the time creatively. That’s why the label motto is ‘By hook or by crook'.”
‘Grafters’ presents Sputnik One at his rowdiest, allowing the influence of bootlegs and edit culture to rub off on his often pointillist approach. Fizzy vocal chops and a siren-harnessed-as-synth lead dance about on his trademark drums; it’s a proper dancefloor loosener for fans of the Hessle-Livity-Wisdom Teeth pipeline.
Capped off with a digital-only remix of ‘Supa Natural’ from Sputnik and Honeydrip, N-Face is off to a flying start.
‘Supa Natural / Grafters’ lands on 18th October. Pre-order it here.
