What else can be said about Gather Outdoor Music Festival headliner and house music maestro Marc Kinchen, aka ? Dominating the club scene and radio waves since the early '90s, MK is known worldwide for bringing us back to the roots Detroit house music. His radio tracks are as massive as his underground roots with his latest tune ‘Body 2 Body' already eclipsing 500k streams on Spotify in less than 2 weeks.
We had the chance to catch up with MK ahead Gather Outdoor Music Festival to talk about the revolving door house music, upcoming events, his new single and more. We also got a DOPE playlist curated by the man himself to get us ready to vibe this weekend. Check 'em out below!
EDM Sauce – Thank you for doing this! I'm digging the new sound on your new single Body 2 Body, much more progressive than the typical piano house anthem. What made you want to go in this direction for this track?
MK – This is a great question but an easy one for me. The vocals are always the catalyst for me. If there is a great vocal, I am in. When I heard LPW’s vocals, I thought, whoa I have to do this. As for the different sound, it’s always good to mix things up and the main reason to take a different approach is simple, I tend to follow what the song asks me to do. I hope that does not sound weird.
Even though you've been around for 30 years, your sound is still as fresh as ever. I feel like that piano house sound is really starting to pick up again, especially in the mainstream dance scene. What are your thoughts on the current explosion summer flavor house sound?
MK – Right, I think the same thing, it’s like everything has gone full circle. My remixes from the ’90s especially the dubs are killin' it. I can’t even believe it, everything sounds fresh again ..even the pianos and you know I love the pianos.
Gather Outdoor Festival is in its inaugural edition and seems to be brewing into a really special event. What kind set can we expect Sunday as this definitely leans more towards the techno side than the commercial side.
MK – Well, we shall see, after all, it's great to go on a journey….if it has the techno to house vibe, I am from Detroit so I got this. Can’t wait!
Lastly, where can we see MK this summer, and anything else in the works for the summer?
MK – I will be back in Miami Beach at Story May 31st, HQ2 nightclub on June 15th in Atlantic City, The Boat Cruise Summer Series in Boston on July 12th, Secret Solstice in Iceland on June 22nd, Mysteryland in Belgium August 23rd, Parklife in the UK June 8th, Ushuaia, Hi July 1st, Pacha in Ibiza throughout June and I have my five week Area10 residency at Ibiza Rocks starting in July (check my events page and you can see what else is coming up).
